Short answer: A gecko.

Long answer - What was the location?
There are 111 (at last count) species so even seeming irrelevant data such as it's location helps narrow things down quickly.

I'll put my money on the Marbled Gecko Christinus marmoratus.

They can show a fair bit of variablity in colouration, but the location is a big indicator. There aren't very many geckos in the temperate zones.

I'll back Teleost. Where I live there are heaps of marbled geckoes but other species are very rare.
